Thyroxine, (most commonly available as Levothyroxine) is a hormonal drug given for hypothyroidism: that is when the thyroid gland produces less thyroxine hormone than is adequate for the body. Thyroxine hormone is extremely important for existence in that it principally regulates the metabolic rate of the body. Thus, when this hormone is deficient, it is replaced by taking thyroxine externally in the form of tablets.

Thyroxine tablets are best taken early in the morning as the first thing after waking up. This is to ensure that it is ingested on an empty stomach, as the presence food reduces the absorption which is otherwise absorbed well from the digestive tract. It is important to note that even the bed tea may significanlty reduce the amount of drug absorbed. If taken at a different time of the day after consuming food or if a person wants to have tea/coffee in the morning, one needs to wait for 1-2 hours before taking the drug. Any meal after taking the drug too needs to be spaced out by another 1-2 hours. Furthermore, absorption of thyroxine will be complete and less variableif taken at the same time every day.
